9 Boozy Milkshake with Warninks Advocaat

This boozy milkshake with Warninks advocaat is proof that this gorgeous yellow liqueur should not be reserved just for Christmas. In fact, it’s far more versatile that tradition has led us to believe. This adult-friendly shake is a perfect treat that can be enjoyed throughout the entire year.

I’m presenting this Warninks advocaat alcoholic milkshake dressed for Easter get-togethers but it’s easy to adapt the decorations to make it suit any occasion or season. I’ve included a few ideas near the end of this post.

Why this alcoholic milkshake is worth making

This boozy milkshake is easy to dress up and make look tempting. But leaving the façade aside, there are plenty of other reasons why this drink is worth making:

  • It requires only 4 ingredients
  • Toppings are optional extras and entirely customisable
  • It tastes wonderful – gorgeous vanilla custard flavours blend with punchy alcohol and creamy ice cream superbly
  • The pastel yellow colour is so pretty
  • It takes mere minutes to blend this drink

Ingredients notes

When it comes to advocaat, I will only ever use Warninks. I have tried alternative brands, but I’m afraid they have never quite matched up. Warninks advocaat combines great taste with a lusciously thick texture that seems impossible to beat or even come close to matching. It’s perfect in this alcoholic milkshake.

Just a small splash of brandy is required in this shake, but it does boost the alcoholic flavour in this boozy milkshake. Go for a sensibly priced reliable option such as Three Barrels. It delivers great flavour for a keen price-point.

Pick good quality vanilla ice cream. Ensure it is full-fat rather than skinny ice cream to guarantee that the resulting drink is creamy, indulgent and delicious.

Just a small splash of milk rounds this recipe off. Full-fat milk is best, but you can get away with using semi-skimmed if that’s what you have to hand.

Step-by-step instructions

This boozy milkshake couldn’t be simpler to make:

  1. Put the Warninks advocaat, brandy, milk and ice cream into a blender
  2. Secure the lid and blitz for 30 seconds or until smooth
  3. Pour into a serving glass and garnish as desired
  4. Serve immediately

Expert tips

  • Pop the alcohol into the fridge the day before you intend to make these shakes. This simple step really helps create a milkshake that is deliciously chilled.
  • This ice-cold drink is best served as soon as possible so prepare the toppings before blending the drink to ensure that they can be added as soon as the drink is poured.
  • Pop the serving glasses in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes before making the milkshake to help keep it cold once poured.
  • Make sure your blender and the glassware are very clean. Even a trace of something acidic, such as lemon juice or vinegar, could make the drink curdle.
  • Use quality ice cream to ensure a great final flavour.
  • If you would like your shake thicker just add more ice cream.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave out the brandy?

Of course. The brandy adds depth of flavour to the overall drink but if you prefer to leave it out that’s perfectly acceptable. The milkshake will have a less boozy taste.

Can I use a different flavour ice cream?

Vanilla ice cream is the ideal partner for Warninks advocaat in this boozy milkshake. The custardy taste of this lovely yellow liqueur is rich in vanilla flavour.

If you did want to deviate from this partnership, try coffee ice cream as advocaat does pair well with a cup of java. Keep in mind that the colour of the ice cream will affect the final colour of this boozy milkshake.

Alternatively, blend the milkshake as instructed and then float a scoop of different flavoured ice cream on the top in place of the whipped cream. Chocolate, coffee or even pistachio would all work well in this instance.

Can I make the milkshake without a blender?

Yes, you can. Put everything into a jug and beat well, with a balloon whisk, until combined.

Topping ideas

This alcoholic milkshake has been adorned for Easter in the images here, but changing the garnishes renders it suitable for any occasion. Try the following ideas out:

  • Opt for edible flowers for a summer garden party or BBQ.
  • Birthday celebrations call for colourful funfetti style sprinkles.
  • For an all-rounder slide a custard creams biscuit into the cream (or crumble it over and use as sprinkles).
  • Popcorn and nuts are both crowd pleasing options.
  • At Halloween opt for meringue ghosts.
  • And at Christmas make a cute marshmallow snowman or top the cream with festive sprinkles.
