Chocolate Dipped Ice Cream Cones. That’s a crisp waffle cone dipped in chocolate, rolled in nuts or sprinkles then filled with your favourite ice cream. These cones are incredibly fun to make and eat.
School holidays mean one thing for me – two eager helpers when it comes to making treats. Last week we made these Chocolate Dipped Ice Cream Cones. That’s a crisp waffle cone dipped in chocolate, rolled in nuts or colourful sprinkles then filled with your favourite ice cream.
Hello summer.
Truthfully, I should re-phrase that and say that we dipped and decorated shop-bought ice cream cones. And if that sounds super easy to you, well yes, you’ve guessed correctly: this recipe is as straightforward as I’m ever likely to write about. In fact, I feel vaguely guilty sharing it with you.
We’ve been decorating/ making these Chocolate Dipped Ice Cream Cones once a year for around 4 years now. I got the idea after Hannah & Milly and me started eyeing up some fancy cones at an ice cream stall one day. They looked delightful and I knew both girls and me would have been so thrilled to get one.
But guess what? Just like most things that our little girls dream of, these cute looking cones had an astronomical price tag. One that was too hard for me to swallow.
I’m so glad I didn’t give in to my weaker judgement and buy them one. Instead, I decided we should make them at home. Wise choice: making these Chocolate Dipped Ice Cream Cones is immensely fun.
As regular readers know, I am a self-confessed lover of family traditions. So it should come as no surprise that each and every year, we make these cones together. Only once per year though – otherwise that’s an extravagant habit in my book, not a tradition.
Of course, Hannah & Milly go crazy for the chance to dip and twirl those waffle cones in whatever sprinkles they decide on that day.
Confession: I have never attempted to make waffle cones at home (I like the chocolate dipping too much). If you are tempted to give them a go, then head over to ourbestbites for a great sounding recipe & a few tips. I’m liking the size of those cones.
I honestly don’t know how I’ll cope when my girls grow up, leave home and I’m left with no one to help me with all my baking traditions. On the plus side, Hannah & Milly may one day decide that they are adult enough to willingly choose the nuts over the sugar sprinkles every now and again.
For now, I’ll just make the most of those small hands in my photos.
Next week I’ll be sharing a fresh, summery smoothie recipe. Follow along to ensure you don’t miss out. Subscribers get all of my recipes delivered straight to their inbox. Bonus.
📖 Recipe
Chocolate Dipped Ice Cream Cones
Ingredients
- 200 g/ 7oz chocolate (I like dark chocolate – 70%)
- 10 waffle cones
Toppings of choice:
- Finely chopped pistachio nuts
- Finely chopped hazelnuts
- Dessicated (shredded) coconut
- Hundreds & Thousands
- Shaped sugar sprinkles
Instructions
- Find 10 cups/ glasses deep enough to hold an individual ice cream cone (once dipped and rolled the cones need to set without touching a surface, the sides of the glass or other cone)
- Spread the sprinkles, nuts and coconut onto small, shallow plates
- Finely chop the chocolate, Put ⅔ of the chocolate into a narrow bowl and melt in a microwave: cook on full power, stirring every 30 seconds, until just melted. Add the remaining chocolate and stir until smooth
- Working quickly, dip a cone into the chocolate to create a layer of chocolate around the top of the cone. Roll the cone in the desired topping and stand in a glass to set
- Repeat with the remaining cones
- Once set, store the cones in an airtight container for up to 3 days

This is SO BEAUTIFUL! I am such a sucker for anything chocolate dipped and will dip anything in chocolate if I’m allowed to! 😛 I know summer isn’t over yet so I might have to make another batch of ice cream just to have these! 😀

We could have a party – you make the ice cream, I’ll bring the cones.

Ah thanks Winnie – sorry for the slow reply, I’ve been away on our family holiday.

Ok you’re not supposed to make me cry!!!
I feel guilty about sharing the simple recipes too but they are VERY popular because who has time???
I’m currently fantasizing about getting a few of Iris’s (my daughter) friends together and doing a cone dipping party. In the kitchen. With newspaper on the tables and floor 😉 Thanks for linking these beauties to #SaucySaturdays.

Wow. Thankyou Christine. Easy recipes are the way to go, especially in the school holidays. Great idea for a party, and what a beautiful name you chose for you daughter. I started doing these with my girls when Milly was a teeny-tiny 2 year old. Dipping outside on the patio was to only way for me to contain the inevitable mess at that point, but this year it wasn’t actually that messy. I think they’re ready to graduate to the kitchen next year.
