The Fluffy Duck cocktail is a light-hearted cocktail that embraces rum and orange liqueur alongside deliciously creamy and full-bodied Warninks advocaat. This rum Fluffy Duck drink is quick, easy & fun to make plus it can be presented as a short or long drink.

If you want to get funky with your advocaat cocktail and create something a little different, might I suggest this spiced rum-based version of the Fluffy Duck cocktail?
When creating this recipe, I did my usual research to understand more about the original cocktail only to discover… very little.
It’s not a widely known drink and as such, only a few recipes for it are out there. And guess what – those that do exist can’t agree on the ingredients:
- Should it include gin or rum?
- Should it be a long drink or a short drink?
- And if it’s a long drink should the bubbles be soda water or lemonade?
So many questions. What I do know is that the advocaat Fluffy Duck drink is a fun cocktail however it is made and served. As the name suggests it is light-hearted with gentle flavours and a creamy consistency that makes this libation endearing and heart-warming.
What is a Fluffy Duck?
Before I introduce my version of the Fluffy Duck cocktail, let’s take a look at the two different versions of this rather mysterious advocaat drink.
The Fluffy Duck with Gin
This drink incorporates gin, advocaat, triple sec, orange juice and soda water (or often lemonade). It is a long drink often served in a highball or balloon glass. This is the most common version of the Fluffy Duck cocktail.
Rumour has it that this version of the Fluffy Duck drink was created in the early 1970s at a bar in New South Wales, Australia., though there is no mention of soda water or lemonade in the associated recipe.
The Fluffy Duck with rum
This cocktail includes advocaat, white rum and cream. Sometimes, but not always, triple sec makes an appearance. It is generally served in a cocktail glass although, occasionally, it is converted into a long drink by the addition of lemonade.
Hand on heart, I have a feeling that the addition of lemonade to the rum-based version is an accident caused by the existence of two different Fluffy Duck drinks knocking around.
The origin of this version of the advocaat Fluffy Duck drink is not known.
Why you’ll like my version with spiced rum
It’s fair to say that my Fluffy Duck recipe takes elements from both of these classic drinks:
- My rum-based Fluffy Duck cocktail recipe uses spiced rum rather than white rum to inject a little extra depth of warming flavour to the mix.
- I’ve also elected to keep the triple sec in the blend because orange, spices and creamy advocaat are all flavours that play very well together.
- However, I’m leaving it up to you when it comes to the addition of the lemonade. Talk about sitting on the fence! It’s lovely with or without it, so have it your way.
Personally, I particularly enjoy the short version of this Fluffy Duck cocktail without lemonade. I find the subtle hints of spice and citrus balance the creamy flavours in this drink superbly and the buzz of alcohol is just right. But I do have a leaning towards short drinks generally.
However, I would definitely recommend the addition of lemonade to diehard fans of the Snowball cocktail who are, perhaps, just looking for a bit of a change to switch up their usual Christmas advocaat cocktail pattern.
Fans of advocaat should take a look at my collection of advocaat recipes that feature this liqueur as the star ingredient. There are cocktails, hot drinks, bakes and desserts to tempt you.
Ingredients Notes
Advocaat: I only ever buy Warninks advocaat. I have tried others, but they don’t quite match up to the flavour or texture that Warninks have created. Their advocaat delivers a deep and mellow taste coupled with a gloriously smooth and thick texture. Accept no substitutes.
Rum: pick a spiced amber rum to bring depth and warmth to the overall flavour profile of this Fluffy Duck cocktail. It may not be traditional but it’s a great addition. I used Sailor Jerry which has a lovely smooth flavour and just the right level of spice for this cocktail.
Triple Sec: this adds a zesty hint of fresh citrus to the drink. It’s a welcome addition that ties up all the other flavours exceedingly well, so please don’t leave it out.
Cream: opt for single cream with a fat content of around 18%. Double cream is too rich here. If you’re not in the UK try half and half.
Lemonade (optional): if you do intend to add lemonade to your Fluffy Duck drink then make sure you choose a premium version. Beware of supermarket own brands, or worse still, low-sugar lemonade. The low-sugar versions are typically cloyingly sweet without a hint of fresh lemon flavour. Avoid these at all costs. Splash out on a better brand and reap the benefits.
Step-by-step instructions
This Fluffy Duck drink takes mere minutes to make:
- Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
- Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
- Decide how to serve it:
- Strain into a martini glass and serve
- Strain into a balloon glass and top with chilled lemonade
However you serve it – short or long – do add some fun garnishes.
How to present this Fluffy Duck Drink
Whether you opt for the short or long version of this Fluffy Duck recipe do give some thought to the presentation of this drink. It’s an easy-going cocktail that doesn’t take itself too seriously, so get playful with the garnishes. Here are a few ideas:
- Stay simple and opt for a twist of fresh orange peel.
- Add a splash of colour using fresh strawberries on a cocktail pick.
- Get indulgent by adding in some white chocolates – thread one or two onto the cocktail pick along with a strawberry for a bold presentation.
- Rim the glass by dipping first in advocaat and then in white chocolate shavings or desiccated coconut.
- Keep things classic and go for some plump maraschino cherries. These never go out of fashion.
- If you intend to serve it at a party during your Christmas festivities in place of the Snowball then try garnishing it with a mini gingerbread house perched on the side of the glass. It ties in nicely with the spiced rum.
Expert tips
- It is still possible to make this Fluffy Duck drink even if you do not own a cocktail shaker. Try using a large glass jar with a screw top lid or at a push stir the advocaat, rum, triple sec, cream and a handful of ice together in a jug for 30 seconds.
- Always measure your ingredients carefully as most cocktails, including this one, are a carefully balanced blend of flavours, alcohol strength and non-alcoholic ingredients. You don’t need fancy bar measurers – a set of digital kitchen scales will do the job.
- Ensure your lemonade is well chilled too – the Fluffy Duck cocktail should always be served chilled rather than lukewarm.
- On that note, try to chill your glassware before pouring the drinks too.
Frequently asked questions
Yes and no.
By all means, prepare the ingredients up to step 2 in advance. At this point, strain to remove the ice and then chill well until ready to serve.
But whatever you do, do not add the lemonade in advance. This needs to be added at the point of serving as it not only creates an effervescent drink but it also gives the Fluffy Duck cocktail the signature bubbly or fluffy top.
The only reason this advocaat drink would curdle is if the ingredients come into contact with something acidic, such as lemon juice or vinegar. For this reason, it is essential to ensure that your equipment and glassware are scrupulously clean.
If using the lemonade in your Fluffy Duck cocktail, the mixture will separate if left to stand. This is natural but would only happen if the drink were left for well over an hour. By this time the drink would no longer be chilled and the fizz of the lemonade would have dissipated. Take my advice: make these drinks one at a time and enjoy them within a sensible time frame.
When made with Warninks advocaat, this drink is entirely suitable for vegetarians. Warninks advocaat contains only egg yolks, brandy, sugar and vanilla. There are no unexpected extra ingredients to be wary of.
