Christmas latte with Warninks advocaat is a unique and highly delicious way to take your latte this festive season. Coffee and advocaat are a wonderful combination of flavours and they work in harmony to make a truly spectacular Christmas coffee drink. It’s a quick and easy recipe too.

If you want to impress guests (or just yourself) with a fun and unusual Christmas latte this festive season, try out my Christmas coffee drink made with Warninks advocaat.
The combination of strong, heady espresso coffee, steamed milk and a good splash of advocaat is out of this world. It’s like no other Christmas latte you may have had before and I urge any coffee-loving adult, even if your latte palate is not jaded, to try it. You won’t regret it.
What is a Christmas latte?
A Christmas latte is a milky coffee drink that has been flavoured with something Christmassy. Gingerbread is a common flavour, but for a boozy treat, I’ve put that aside in favour of adding a generous splash of Warninks advocaat. It’s a magical Christmas latte flavour.
Advocaat has a strong connection to all things Christmas because it is the star ingredient in the legendary Snowball cocktail which has been a particularly popular festive drink since the 1970s.
The ratio of a typical latte is one-third espresso coffee to two-thirds steamed milk. This Christmas coffee drink combines a shot of advocaat with the espresso and milk though, so the ratio does differ. But trust me, it’s still a lovely milky sweet coffee drink, just with a buzzing kick of alcohol included.
Why you’ll love this Christmas coffee recipe
Advocaat pairs wonderfully well with coffee (don’t miss my boozy take on the espresso affogato) so it’s the ideal choice for making a truly unique Christmas coffee drink just for adults. All-in-all this drink is:
- Quick and easy to make.
- Exceptional fun – especially if you go to town dressing it up with festive style.
- Unexpected – Advocaat coffee is so much more original than gingerbread coffee – so go on and wow your guests whether you’re spending precious time with a friend or hosting a larger Christmas party.
- Delicious right through the festive season and beyond – it’s a lovely warming drink, so why limit it to just Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?
And if you like hot drinks with advocaat, then you really should take a look at my Bombardino recipe. It’s a shorter drink, originating from Italy and it’s great for warming up with when it’s cold outside.
Ingredients notes
There are so few ingredients in this Christmas latte so let’s look at them all in more detail:
Warninks Advocaat: Warninks is the leading advocaat liqueur brand in the UK and for good reason. It offers unrivalled quality at an affordable price tag. Take my advice and don’t accept poor imitations.
Flavour-wise, expect sweet and creamy notes, with hints of vanilla custard. Made with brandy, this liqueur packs quite a robust punch of alcohol flavour too.
Espresso coffee: this Christmas coffee drink is best made with freshly brewed espresso coffee. Use around 15g of ground espresso per 60ml water to ensure a good strong brew.
As for the type of coffee to use, don’t get too hung up on this. Whatever you have to hand will suffice, but if you need to buy in especially for this recipe then pick coffee with notes of chocolate, vanilla, orange or caramel in the flavour profile.
Milk: use whole (full fat) milk for the creamiest flavour in your Christmas coffee. At a pinch semi-skimmed can be used instead, but this is where I draw the line. Please don’t opt for skimmed milk. It’s just too insipid and will result in a substandard drink.
If you need to use non-dairy milk opt for something such as almond milk or oat milk. These two have a relatively bland taste and so will not interfere with the final flavour of the drink. Coconut might also be a viable option but expect hints of coconut to come through as you sip.
Step-by-step-instructions
- Pour the advocaat into a warmed latte glass or mug.
- Brew the espresso (either using a coffee machine, an Aeropress or cafetiere)
- Heat the milk to approximately 60C-70C either in a milk pan or using the steaming wand of a coffee machine and pour over the coffee mixture.
- Garnish as desired with a selection of toppings and serve immediately.
Serving suggestions for this Christmas latte
When it comes to serving this Christmas latte there are a number of ways you can take it:
- If you prefer your Christmas coffee without cream, then simply pour it into a coffee glass or mug and garnish it with a cinnamon stick.
- Alternatively, try some easy Christmas latte art using a festive latte stencil and shake some chocolate powder over it. Designs that work well include:
- Father Christmas
- Snowman
- Gingerbread man
- Snowflakes
- Bauble
- Christmas tree
- Go all out on decorating your Christmas coffee by topping with a swirl of whipped cream and adding some finishing touches. Here are a few ideas:
- marshmallows
- a mini gingerbread man
- mini stroopwafel cookies
- colourful seasonal sprinkles
- If you want to get extra boozy you could add a splash of Warninks advocaat into the cream (around 1 tablespoon per 50ml of cream works a treat).
Basically, anything goes when it comes to jazzing up your homemade Christmas coffee drink, so have some fun and inject your own style into it.
Expert tips
- Pick your glass or mug carefully. Make it extra special because it’s Christmas!
- Warm the mug before adding the Christmas coffee – nobody enjoys a lukewarm latte. Just pour some freshly boiled water into the glass or mug and leave it to stand whilst you get on with making the Warninks Advocaat coffee. When ready to pour simply throw away the hot water.
- Use advocaat that has been stored or brought back up to room temperature if it has been in the fridge. Using chilled advocaat will cool the coffee down a little too much.
Frequently asked questions
Always use the best coffee that you can afford. This goes for any coffee drink, not just this Christmas latte. I prefer to buy whole beans and grind them at home for the ultimate in freshness, but pre-ground espresso powder is perfectly acceptable.
Pick a coffee that has a robust and deep flavour. If it has notes of chocolate, orange or caramel about it all the better.
Oh, and if you prefer decaf coffee, the great news is that this Christmas coffee drink can easily comply. Just use decaffeinated coffee when you brew your cup.
Yes, you can. The best creamy foam is always going to be made when the espresso coffee and milk are freshly made, but this boozy Christmas latte can certainly be prepared & cooled and then stored in the fridge ready to be reheated when required.
Fancy making a batch for a party? You can always keep it warm in a slow cooker.
Absolutely. To do this simple prepare the coffee then mix in the Advocaat. Fill a glass with ice, pour the coffee mix over it and top up with cold milk. Whipped cream is a lovely addition to this Christmas iced coffee.
Technically, yes, you could add more advocaat to this drink. However, I find that 40ml is the perfect balance alongside the strong espresso coffee. The flavours play in harmony, without either one overpowering the other. Feel free to add more (or less) Advocaat but do so cautiously.
Yes, it usually is. Warninks Advocaat is made from brandy, egg yolks, sugar and vanilla. That’s it. So, you can always rely on Warninks to be fit for a vegetarian diet.
Although it is not vegan, Warninks advocaat, despite its creamy texture and taste, is actually dairy-free. This means that this Christmas coffee recipe can be made dairy-free simply by replacing the cow’s milk with non-dairy milk. Oat milk and almond milk are both great substitutions.

Where do you get the sachets of Advocaat from please
Jane Saunders
Hi Barbara – they are infact a Christmas tree ornament and don’t contain advocaat. They were available last Christmas when Warninks gifted them with the purchase of a Snowball drink in UK pubs. Not sure if they are doing the same this year, but I’ll ask (assuming you’re UK based?). I gave a couple to my Mum last year as she’s a lover of advocaat, but she too thought they contained alcohol and so cut one open 🙂 🙂
